The German U-85 was a Type VII-B of which only 24 were built. With a crew of 44 under the command of Capt-Oberleutant Zer See Eberhard Greger the U-85 was on her 4th war patrol when she was sunk by the USS Roper on April 14, 1942. The U-85 lies 17 miles northeast of Oregon Inlet, North Carolina in 100 feet of water.
